In the heart of Middletown, Connecticut stands Saint Sebastian Roman Catholic Church — a lasting monument to faith, resilience, and community. Its elegant Romanesque design has graced the skyline since the 1920s, but beyond its bricks and mortar lies a story of deep local roots — and of a family legacy that has come full circle nearly a century later.

A Church Built by Community and Craft

In 1925, as waves of Italian immigrants settled in Middletown, they brought with them not only a desire for opportunity — but a deep sense of faith and tradition. As the community grew, so did the yearning for a church of their own. Through tireless grassroots fundraising — weekly Sunday collections from Italian families — an impressive $85,000 was raised during the heart of the Great Depression.

With the endorsement of Bishop John J. Nilan, the church became a reality. Local architect Raymond C. Gorrani was selected to design the structure, and a young, talented mason — Salvatore Mazzotta — was entrusted with leading the construction. Supported by local artisans who generously donated materials, the Church was built not just as a place of worship, but as a symbol of unity and pride for Middletown’s Italian-American community.

In 1963, Salvatore — now a respected mason — joined forces with his brother Sebastiano to found Mazzotta Brothers, a masonry company grounded in the same values that built Saint Sebastian Church: hard work, integrity, and pride in craftsmanship.

Over the years, Mazzotta Brothers grew to become a leading commercial masonry contractor in the Northeast, completing major projects across Connecticut and beyond. The company’s reputation for quality and reliability was forged in stone — quite literally — by the hands of its founders.
